ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Computer Science since its establishment in 1989 is an important part of CIT at the University of Bahrain (UoB). The DCS offers B.Sc. programs in Computer Science, Cloud Computing and Software Engineering. The DCS contributes actively in the Ph.D., MSc. and B.Sc. programs offered in the CIT. All offered programs focus on preparing students for working within the IT profession in areas such as computer programming, system analysis and design and software development; as well as preparing them for research and graduate studies in the field of computing. The faculty is made up of 23 faculty members and 16 administrative staff.
Most of the faculty members are actively involved in research activities with research groups focusing mainly on areas such as software engineering, e-learning and artificial intelligence, as well as algorithms and applied big data analytics. The DCS is located at the College of Information Technology Building – S40 on the UoB campus in Sakhir. There are 9 general computer laboratories and one dedicated laboratory for senior projects’ students. Computer Science program includes an advanced set of curricula which are designed according to international standards (such as curricula ACM/IEEE 2013) and compatible with ABET curriculum requirements for Computer Science. Furthermore, the program was accredited since 2010 by ABET and has been listed on the Bahraini National Qualifications Framework since 2015.

OUR PROFESSORS

As of 2020, there are 26 qualified and well-experienced faculty members. 22 of the faculty are PhD holders and 4 MSc holders who handle the lecture classes for the courses. The PhD holders include 1 full rank professor, 3 associate professors, and 18 assistant professors. In addition, the MSc holders include one lecturer and three research assistants who are currently on scholarship. All ranked faculty members have obtained their degrees in different Computer Science related fields from reputable academic institutions globally such as Australia, France, Canada, India, Malaysia, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Faculty specializations are diverse and many hold professional certifications in related IT Cloud Computing (AWS).
In addition to their academic load, the faculty conduct research that is at a regional, and global level, participate in the administrative duties as well as community services. The faculty are involved in many students’ extracurricular activities such as supervising hackathons and competitions, as well as mentoring the students. Senior faculty teach specialized courses at a Master’s and PhD level for college’s own postgraduate courses and in specific IT-based advanced courses for other colleges. All professorial ranked faculty supervise senior (capstone) projects in the undergraduate program, and several supervise MSc and PhD students.
